Wasted healthcare spending due to ED overutilization continues to rise, with a 51% increase in spend from 2012-2019. Health organizations continue to pour money and resources into ED diversion initiatives, but despite best efforts, utilization is at an all-time high with nearly 1 in every 3 ED visits categorized as avoidable or unnecessary.
To move the needle, a consumer-centric approach to behavior change must occur. Understanding who is going to ER when they don’t have to and why are key when designing tailored solutions to combat this nation-wide challenge. This also requires a two-pronged approach: broadening education and accessibility around seeking alternative care models and addressing avoidable visits through chronic condition and mental health/substance use disorder (MH-SUD) management.
Listen as mPulse Mobile’s Wendy Cutting, VP of Healthcare Engagement Solutions, and Aram Khodiguian, Director of Value-Based Care Initiatives, discuss commonalities in patients most likely to visit the ER when they don’t have to and dynamic solutions that address and overcome barriers to receiving alternative methods of care to prevent ED overutilization.
