Is value-based care working in America? It’s a broad question, and the answer you get depends on whom you ask. In a 2023 survey of more than 400 providers, payers and payviders, most said they were currently engaged in value-based care (VBC) initiatives or were planning to launch programs soon. But there were mixed reactions when asked whether VBC programs were successful in controlling costs, improving outcomes or creating better patient experiences.
Interestingly, perception about value-based care can differ from the quantifiable positive results of this approach to healthcare. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina announced that it has achieved nearly $650 million in total savings in its Blue Premier program, “recognized as one of the most rapid and comprehensive shifts to value-based care … by any health plan.” In addition to significant savings, their 1.4 million Blue Premier members had:
- An 18% reduction in unplanned hospital readmissions.
- A 15% increase in members actively managing high blood pressure.
- Approximately 10,000 additional colorectal cancer screenings compared to the prior year.
