Innovative Ways that ACOs can Increase Affordable Housing in Their Communities

With the growing recognition of the importance of Social Determinants of Health, many ACOs are wondering how to realistically impact important factors such as safe and affordable housing in the communities they serve. A few large health systems have invested tens of millions of dollars into affordable housing projects. Others have taken small steps, such as adding tiny houses on their property that can be used when they discharge people experiencing homelessness. Some are collecting data on housing status and housing insecurity to better understand and monitor the magnitude of housing issues for the people they serve.

Those actions may be parts of a strategy to reduce the negative impact that housing insecurity can have on the health of community members, but they are not enough to close the gap between the need for affordable housing and the supply in most communities. Leaders in ACOs who are interested in learning about more ways to address the affordable housing crisis will find a multitude of possibilities in the upcoming virtual summit on “Innovations in Affordable Housing” put on by the Population Health Learning Collaborative.

The virtual summit is much like a major national conference, but people can participate from their own homes or offices, without needing to travel or pay a significant registration fee. This online event consists of 26 sessions and 2 panel discussions that address many different innovations that might be part of a community’s affordable housing strategy: zoning, building codes, local policies, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) & tiny houses, innovative approaches to financing, creative ownership models, new developments in manufactured housing, keys to successful home-sharing, integrating community care coordination with affordable housing options, strategies for housing the homeless, and more! An ACO can be a catalyst for engaging many different partners in a community to work collaboratively to develop and implement a robust, practical and economical strategy that will enhance the Social Determinants of Health in the community.

The dates for the Virtual Summit are August 11 and 12, but people can register and begin to access a wide range of pre-summit content immediately after registering.
